The Vienna Piano Trio has been performing regularly in virtually every major music centre in Europe, the Americas, Australia and the Far East for over 25 years. The Trio was founded in 1988 and after early extensive studies with highly renowned musicians paved its way to an international career. Its most important teachers and mentors include Isaac Stern, Ralph Kirshbaum and Joseph Kalichstein as well as the members of the Trio di Trieste, the Beaux Arts Trio, the Guarneri Quartet and the LaSalle Quartet.
The Vienna Piano Trio frequently performs at music festivals such as the Festival Aix en Provence, Schubertiade, Mozartwoche Salzburg, Beethovenfest Bonn, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Rheingau Musikfestival and Kuhmo (Finland). In addition, the group tours worldwide, performing in London, Paris, Amsterdam, New York, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Bogota, Mexico City, Toronto, Montreal, Sydney, Brussels, Barcelona and Berlin. Recent highlights include opening the season of the Shanghai Concert Hall in autumn 2010 in celebration of its collaboration with the Vienna Konzerthaus, residencies at London’s Wigmore Hall in 2011/2012 and LSO St Luke’s in 2013 and a ten date tour of New Zealand in partnership with Chamber Music New Zealand in 2015.
From 1997 to 2006 the Vienna Piano Trio held its own annual series of concerts as part of the Vienna Musikverein’s “Jeunesse Musicale”. Since 2006 the ensemble has been resident at the Vienna Konzerthaus where it performs four concerts each season in the Mozartsaal. The Trio has performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Brussels Philharmonic, English Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre Metropolitain de Montréal and the Munich Chamber Orchestra.
The Trio’s discography includes works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Dvorák, Shostakovich and Schnittke (Nimbus Records). Since 2002 the Trio has been recording for MDG (Musikproduktion Dabringhaus & Grimm) and CDs include the complete Trios of Schubert and Dvorak, works by Schoenberg, Mahler, Zemlinsky, Smetana, Tchaikovsky, Ravel, Schumann and Saint-Saëns, as well as the latest CD dedicated to Beethoven. Its recordings have earned the highest acclaim as well as several awards – Gramophone Editor’s Choice, BBC Radio 3 Record of the Month and The Times Classical Album of the Year and in July 2010 an ECHO-Klassik for their release of Haydn Piano Trios. Their current project for MDG sees the trio record the complete piano trios by Brahms, the first volume of which was released in May 2016, volume two is set to be released in early 2017.
Highlights of the Trio’s 16/17 season include a performance of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Tonkunstler and Simone Young at the Grafenegg Festival, a tour of the USA, two return performances at the Concertgebouw and three return performances at London’s Wigmore Hall. Together with the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Wigmore Hall have commissioned Thomas Larcher to compose a piece for the Vienna Piano Trio and tenor Mark Padmore. The piece will be premiered at the Vienna Konzerthaus and Wigmore Hall in June 2017. The trio also resume their three year tenure as the first ever International Associate Artists of Turner Sims Southampton, a position that sees them perform four concerts a year until the end of 2018.
